Georgia-based business leader Timothy Sanders Wallis earned a degree in business management from the University of Georgia before beginning a career with Wallis Printing Company in Atlanta. Outside of work, he enjoys running, cycling, and playing tennis. Also an avid golfer, Sanders Wallis supports First Tee of Metro Atlanta.
Since 1999, First Tee of Metro Atlanta has been using the game of golf to build character and life skills among underserved youth in the community. In addition to offering golf programs on golf courses and in schools and youth centers, the organization offers academic scholarships and other financial support.
First Tee of Metro Atlanta currently oversees two scholarship programs, the Dr. Bryan Carey Memorial Book Scholarship and the Jimmy & Bopsy Gabrielsen Book Scholarship. Both scholarships provide $250 awards to two high school seniors each year.
To qualify for the Carey Memorial Scholarship, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA in math and science subjects and hold membership in First Tee of Metro Atlanta. Applicants are also required to submit a short essay discussing their passion for golf and STEM subjects. An essay and First Tee membership are also required of applicants for the Gabrielsen Scholarship, which has a minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5.
Alongside its academic scholarships, First Tee of Metro Atlanta provides financial assistance to families of youth who are unable to pay the cost of its Life Skills Experience Programs. Full scholarships are offered to youth who qualify for the federal free lunch program, and partial scholarships are available to those who qualify for reduced lunches.
